Adding a colour background to your video project in Adobe Premiere Pro

Adding a colour background to your video project in Adobe Premiere Pro can be done easily by creating and using a Colour Matte.

Here’s how you can add a colour background using a Colour Matte in Premiere Pro:

Step 1: Create a Colour Matte

Open Premiere Pro and ensure you are in the workspace where your project is open.
Go to the Project Panel (usually found in the lower left corner).
Right-click in the Project Panel and choose New Item > Colour Matte.
Select the Settings for your Colour Matte:

Video Settings: Make sure the settings match your sequence (resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, etc.). If unsure, you can usually safely match it to your sequence settings.

Click OK.

Choose a Colour:

A colour picker will appear. Select the colour you want for your background. You can either pick a colour from the colour field, enter specific RGB, HSL, or HEX code values, or sample a colour using the eyedropper tool.

Click OK after you’ve selected your colour.

Name Your Colour Matte:

Give it a descriptive name if you plan on using multiple colours. This makes it easier to identify your project.

Click OK.

Step 2: Add the Colour Matte to Your Sequence

Drag the Colour Matte from the Project Panel to your timeline.

Place it on the track where you want the colour background. Typically, this would be the track below your main video if you want it as a background.

Adjust the length of the Colour Matte clip in the timeline to match the duration you need for the background.

Step 3: Edit and Position Your Colour Matte

Resize or Reposition:

If the Colour Matte doesn’t fit the frame or needs adjustment, select the clip in the timeline, go to the Effect Controls panel, and adjust the Scale or Position under the Motion settings.

Layer with Other Elements:

You can layer text, images, or other video clips over the Colour Matte by placing them on higher tracks in the timeline.

Step 4: Export or Continue Editing

Continue Editing: Add other elements or effects as needed for your project.

Export Your Video: Once you are done with your project, export it by going to File > Export > Media.

Useful Tips:

Use Colour Matte for Transitions: You can also use Colour Mattes to create transitions between clips by animating the opacity.

Custom Effects: Apply effects to the Colour Matte for more dynamic backgrounds, such as gradients by using the Ramp effect.

Why Resize Video Clips in Premiere Pro?

If you are adding video clips in Premiere Pro, then you want to make sure the video is not being cropped or in some cases, you may want to zoom into a specific area of a video clip. You often see the zoom-in to an area on YouTube video tutorials for software applications.

According to Product London Design, mastering the art of video resizing in editing software like Premiere Pro is essential for content creators aiming to optimise their videos for various social media platforms. This skill ensures your content displays correctly across different devices and platforms, enhancing viewer engagement.

Will my video pixelate if I zoom in?

Yes, you will see some pixelation, so consider this before you zoom far into your content, if you have a 4k video then you can zoom in further when editing in 1080p.

Manually resize a video clip in Adobe Premiere Pro, follow these steps:

Import the video file you want to resize into your Premiere Pro project.
Drag the video clip from the Project panel onto the Timeline.
In the Timeline, select the video clip you want to resize by clicking on it.
Go to the Effect Controls panel on the right side of the screen. The panel should display the selected clip’s properties and controls.
In the Effect Controls panel, find the Scale property under the Transform section.
To resize the clip horizontally, adjust the Scale Width value. To resize the clip vertically, adjust the Scale Height value. You can also adjust both values at the same time to change the overall size of the clip.
To maintain the aspect ratio of the clip while resizing, hold down the Shift key while adjusting the Scale Width or Scale Height values.
To see a preview of the resized clip, press the spacebar to play the video on the Program monitor.
When you’re happy with the new size of the clip, you can save your project and export the video.

You can use any image you like but I suggest you crop the image to the video size, I normally use 1920 x 1080 image size.

Green screen tutorial – step by step guide

1. Download the following video clips:

2. Create a new Premiere Pro project and Import the video clips.

3. Add the video clips to the timeline.

4. Apply the Premiere Pro Ultra Key effect to the green screen video clip on the timeline.

Tip: Search for “Ultra” in the effect panel, then simply drag and drop the ultra key onto the video clip.

5. Select the colour picker tool in the ultra key setting and then click on the green content in the green screen video clip.

6. Tweak the ultra key settings to improve the removal of the green screen if required.

No, the background can be any colour, but should not be constant with the foreground colour. In most filming setups the background is either green or blue.

Should I use studio lights when filming?

It is a good idea to have adequate lighting when filming for any project. Make sure your green screen cloth a matt and not reflective.

Can I still edit the After Effect file after importing it into Premiere Pro?

Yes, the AE file is independent of Premiere Pro, you can simply import (link) the AE composition in Premiere Pro and you can still edit the AE file in After Effects.

After editing in After Effects, make sure you save the project so you can see the updates directly in Premiere Pro.
