Top super tips for creating a powerful LinkedIn profile

LinkedIn is a social media site for professionals. It’s where you can post yourself and your achievements, goals, work history, etc. You can also search for jobs and network with like-minded people.

Your network can be built up over time and these LinkedIn members can vouch for your skill sets.

The key though is using LinkedIn to the best of your abilities, to put your best self out there. Here are a few ways to do that.

Make Sure the Headers Section is on Point

This means that your name should be included, and not a nickname just your full name and the headline should grab attention. Your summary should be interesting and should stand out, complementing your skills and what you have achieved.

As for your network… strive for over 500+ contacts as this shows your ability to communicate and grow.

Make it Professional but Personal

Did you know you can publish articles on LinkedIn? Well if you didn’t know, now you know. Published articles that are well written, well researched and well thought out help to give employers, or potential customers a view into your personal side and what is important to you.

Just like other social media sites, update your status and engage with your connections.

Another thing you can do is to add a video. Videos are a great way for people to delve more into your life and feel like they know you a little more personally. Just ensure that the background is neat and your video is done clearly. On that same note, your profile photo should be a professional headshot.

All About You

This is the fun part, you get to write about yourself and talk about yourself (some people might not like this but it’s an imperative part of networking and getting a foot in the door). Your profile, or the about me section should be written in the first person, just like you were speaking to let’s say, one hiring manager. Highlight your experience and accomplishments tailor it to the specific market that you are looking into and specify how you can help them.

Then let people know how to contact you. Also complete your contact information with a personalised LinkedIn URL, a website for your or your business (if applicable), social media if applicable, as well as your contact information such as phone and email.

Don’t Forget About Your Past

Prior experience should always be included. This includes previous jobs, internships, and schooling as well as volunteering if you have done some.

It’s important to highlight where you received your skills from and also if you have a reliable history, which shows that you are a reliable worker and stay at places for an extended period of time. Don’t forget to add your skills, awards/honours, and recommendations from past employers/business contacts. These are the most important because if you have people who will vouch for you, it makes you more interesting and reliable to a potential employee or business customer.
